Description

Mrs. Clark applied for the Habitat for Humanity Home Preservation program to get help in repairing her roof. She is the widow of a veteran and has serious health problems, living on a fixed income. Although she has homeowner’s insurance, it will not cover the cost to replace the roof and she is not in a position to be able to refinance her home.

When we first met with Virginia, she was in the process of cancelling her health insurance in order to have enough money to get her roof fixed. Habitat for Humanity's Home Preservation program works with home owners in just such dire straits. Homeowners are asked to repay on the value of the materials used in the repair, based on their income levels, and allows them to make small monthly payments that are affordable for them, and the home owner will provide snacks and lunch for the volunteers as part of her partnership in the program. Habitat will set up an agreement that will allow her to continue to have her health insurance and set her monthly payments to Habitat so that it will not cause a financial hardship for her.

The majority of the supplies have been donated and the professional roofers are charging us a very small fee to do the re-shingling of the roof. What we need are some volunteers to tear off the old roof to prepare for the roofing crew. We would love to have 4 – 6 volunteers to tear off the existing materials and load the debris into the dumpster.

Work will begin at 8 am, at 1028 E 3rd Street in Portales
